I was completely wrong about iPad. iPad is not just a giant iPhone. It is a very complex machine that simplifies the user experience and gives developers the tools to make great software for the every day user. There is the rub.
iPad is not a replacement for a laptop or desktop. It is a great carry around tool that let's you do simple tasks effectively. It works as a notepad, a video player, and a place to talk to others. It's not meant for "computing" so to speak.
It is meant to be a "lean back" platform. It will never replace the desktop, but it will definitely replace the laptop in terms of portability. I'd rather use an iPad in a meeting than a laptop because it brings my eyes and hands back together again.
In the laptop world our eyes and hands are separated by a monitor, keyboard, and a mouse (even though we only have two hands). The iPad makes it easy because it utilizes hand eye coordination from years of video games to do every day tasks like taking notes, sketching ideas, or watching videos.
And for some this is all they want to do. On top of that Apple has essentially influenced developers with limitations and guidance to build applications that a) work b) simplify our life and c) do one task well.
That is the the trick, minimize user input and maximize application output. On top of all that, it's cheaper than a laptop and with 3G can access the internet anywhere, with no extra hassle.
